What is the DISC assessment?

Developed in the 1920's by psychologist William Moulton Marston, the DISC is a simple but powerful way to understand workplace behavior. Built on just four primary personality types—Drive, Influence, Support, and Clarity—the DISC assessment is easy to learn, while also providing deep insights into how people get motivated, work together, and produce results.

What does the DISC assessment measure?

The DISC assessment measures two fundamental aspects of behavior, which are combined to create the four DISC types. Each of the DISC types has a typical approach and style in the workplace:

  • Drive. Actively approaching challenges. Drive types tend to be assertive leaders.
  • Influence. Engaging actively with support. Influence types tend to be enthusiastic leaders.
  • Support. Responding with support. Support types tend to be helpful contributors.
  • Clarity. Responding thoughtfully to challenges. Clarity types tend to be precise contributors.

Test takers are scored on their fit with all four types, with the highest score being their primary DISC type. In addition, the assessment scores test takers on 8 subtypes, to provide more nuanced profiles for individuals whose behavior demonstrates a mix of styles.

What’s covered in the results for the DISC assessment?

The DISC report is designed to introduce the basic concepts of behavioral style, as well as to explain clearly how these factors are observed in the workplace. In addition to foundational sections on the four types and the behaviors described by the DISC framework, the DISC report includes detailed sections on relevant topic areas, including task management, teamwork, communication, conflict, and leadership.
